Internet Teleconferencing : Shrinking The World

The world is 40,075,160 meters across along the equator. Getting communication from two points of the globe used to take days, sometimes months, to reach its destination. At the beginning of the previous century, instant communication back was possible via telegrams, but only a few people could read Morse code, and most of them were in the military.

A technology evolved, one thing led to another until the world gave birth to the Internet. The Internet has turned Earth’s massiveness into the size of your monitor and everything from China to America is at the tip of your fingertips.

In relation to communication, the Internet has made it possible for great amounts of users to talk at once. Instead of months for a single message to reach opposite sides of the world, it only takes a few seconds today. You are now able to talk with your business partners in India, Thailand, Singapore and Japan, directly from your office and even while you’re resting at the comfort of your home. This is termed as “Internet Teleconferencing”.

Internet Teleconferencing is the method by which there is a live exchange of information among people in different locations by using the Internet as the medium to transport live audio and video feeds. These can be applied in various ways such telephone conferencing, video conferencing, web conferencing and augmented reality conferencing. This principle is applied in various popular applications such as Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, GoToMeeting and many more.

There are two types of internet teleconference services available: Reservationless Conferencing and the Operator Assisted Conferencing. The basic difference between them is that an Operator Assisted Conferencing is able to support about a hundred participants at one time but require an operator and a reservation made at least a day before so the operator can setup the meeting. This is more expensive and is able to handle large-scale meetings. This can be applied in various scenarios. On the other hand, the Reservationless Conferencing does not need an operator and a reservation, which makes it cheaper, but is only able to handle lesser participants at one time.

With the advent of internet teleconferencing, loved ones on opposite sides of the world can get in touch by a simple click of a button. Business blooms as businessmen are able to outsource work to other countries and hire a less-expensive labor force, keeping track of their foreign employees via internet teleconferencing. Not only that, but businessmen could have the whole world as their market, unconfined by the limitations of their stores or offices.

Employees need not leave the confines and comfort of their homes as they can receive instruction, assignments and monitoring via internet teleconferencing. A doctor from a third-world country could receive a consultation from a more advanced facility continents away. With internet teleconferencing, a Korean could log in online, enroll and take classes about English as Secondary Language courses from foreign and live teachers.

Indeed, internet teleconferencing has changed the way we deal with life. The best thing is that we have not yet tapped its full potential. Time will come when better applications will arise. When that comes, we could be looking at better lifestyle, better business and an even smaller world.
